Tulane vs Ohio State (-36.5)
The Big Ten is horribly overrated this year, but the Buckeyes are the real deal. Dwayne Haskins is one of, if not the best quarterbacks in college football. Other than maybe West Virginia’s Will Grier, or Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, there’s nobody else torching defenses like he has. Haskins is 13th in the country for passing yards per game, but has 20 less attempts then all but two of the players ranked above him. No matter what defense he sees, he’s gonna put up big numbers, and Tulane shouldn’t be much of a challenge. The Green Wave are 102nd in the country in passing yards allowed per game (130 teams), 39th in total punts, and 25th in turnovers per game. This means Ohio State will have extra possessions to find ways to score, and Tulane doesn’t have any chance of stopping them. Finally, Urban Meyer will make his return to college football this Saturday, and everyone knows he’s had this date circled on his calendar. The only thing that might scare you from taking the Buckeyes is that they have covered in only 2 out of 3 games this year as the favorite, and Tulane covered in their only games as an underdog. Don’t be afraid bet on Brutus.
Prediction: 66-7 Ohio State
Old Dominion vs Virginia Tech (-28)
Since Mike Vick played at VT, the Hokies have been a mediocre team at best; however, head coach Justin Fuente has rounded his troops, and made Virginia Tech a competitor. Sophomore Josh Jackson is one of my favorite players in college football. This kid is lightning in a bottle with a pig skin in his hands. He doesn’t turn it over much, and always seems to make smart reads. The defense is also one of the best in the country, only allowing 10 points per game. On the other side of the field are the Old Dominion Monarchs. They’re bad. In their season opener they were put up against the Liberty Flames. The Flames were playing in their very first game at the FBS level and absolutely destroyed Old Dominion. From the opening kickoff they ran it down their throats, winning by the score of 52-10. Old Dominion played better in their next two games, but they still sit at 0-3. Not much more you need to know on these guys, take Virginia Tech to win big.
Prediction: 45-9 Virginia Tech
Mississippi State (-10) vs Kentucky
Although College Gameday is in Eugene for Stanford vs Oregon, I think this will turn out to be the game of the week. Kentucky football is back… wait? What? No let me restate that, Kentucky football has arrived. Kentucky has never been a football “powerhouse”, but this might be the closest they ever get. Led by star running back, Benny Snell Jr., Kentucky has grinded their way to 3-0 for the first time since 1950. On the other sideline MSU has blown out three sub-par teams to find themselves also at 3-0. Their one-two punch of Nick Fitzgerald and Kylin Hill have destroyed opposing defenses, but I’m not buying the hype. The Bulldogs haven’t faced a defense as athletic as Kentucky’s and that might pose problems for the Mississippi State running game. Kentucky boasts the 33rd best defense against the run, only allowing 123 yards per game. If Kentucky can slow down Mississippi’s two headed rushing game, and they limit their turnovers, expect them to not only cover, but upset number 14 Mississippi State.
Prediction: 31-27 Kentucky
