We are little more than a week away from the NFL draft and the Browns have been talking about drafting a left tackle all offseason. The noise for getting a left tackle at the number 10 pick has been so loud, you might forget about the other possible needs. So I’m going to list off the positions that aren’t talked about and my reasons why they’re going to be massively important.
Why a receiver? We have OBJ and Jarvis Landry why even consider it? Well if you looked at the price tag on both of their contracts you would understand why. Keeping both of them together is not feasible long term, so the Browns have to think about a succession plan. Plus they need to address the depth that is sorely needed this season, especially in this deep WR class. I would look for the Browns to get Binjimen Victor or Chase Claypool, who both have the size and big-play abilities to be a third-round gem and eventual WR-1.
With how much the Dawg Pound has complained about Olivier Vernon, you’d think they would want the Browns to draft a defensive end. Much of the defensive end market has come with a hefty price tag, injuries, and age (Griffin, Nguakoue, Clowney, etc.) so drafting a defensive end could be on the table for the Browns. Don’t be surprised to see Yetur Gross-Matos or John Greenard in Orange and Brown on Day 2 to replace Vernon in 2021.
The defensive tackle could be a position of need in the draft. Larry Ogunjobi is in a contract year, and Sheldon Richardson guarantees are up after this season. So the Browns could get out ahead of it, drafting the eventual replacement for either one of them. Marlon Davidson, Jordan Elliot, and Neville Gallimore all make sense in this regard. They all have good pass-rushing abilities and could build depth while developing for the 2021 season.
This one might be a shot in the dark, but I don’t think the Browns are done after the Austin Hooper signing. With David Njoku needing to have a big bounce-back year, and with his 5-year option looming, the Browns could potentially draft a developmental TE just in case. I imagine someone like Colby Parkinson who could be drafted in the 5th or 6th rounds with his 6’7 252 LB frame being a mismatch in the passing game, along with being a solid blocker.
This pick will mainly be for depth, and with the signing of Kevin Johnson for one year, the Browns aren’t in a hurry to upgrade. However, with Johnson’s injury history, I could reasonably expect the Browns to add pieces in the later rounds. With that, I feel like Trajan Bandy could be that late Day-3 pick. He might be undersized at 5’9″ but his aggressive nature and scrappiness could solidify depth in the nickel corner.
Those are some other needs the Browns need to fill, let me know if you agree.
